What you’ll do: You will add every table in your dining room to the location in Settings → Tables. Servers then pick a table on the POS screen, and the table report shows sales by table at close.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Walk the room. Write down every table, booth, bar seat group and patio table. Use the names your team already uses on the floor. If you have no names yet, number tables in the order a server walks the room.
  2. Open Settings → Tables. Go to Settings → Tables. If you have more than one location, choose the location you are setting up. Tables always belong to one location.
  3. Add each table. Add tables one at a time:
    • Name: short and clear, such as “12” or “B4”. This prints on kitchen tickets.
    • Description: optional. Put the section (“Patio”, “Window”) or seat count. Hosts read this when they seat guests.
  4. Add takeout and bar tables. Add a few extra “tables” for orders that are not at a dining table, such as “Bar 1–6”, “Takeout” or “Phone order”. This keeps bar tabs and pickup orders separate in the table report.
  5. Test on the POS screen. Open the POS screen. Pick a table and a service staff member, add one item, and save the order. Check the table shows as busy. Then cancel or complete the test order.

Tips from the onboarding team

  • Match tables to sections. Put the section in the description. When you read the table report, you can see which side of the room earns most.
  • Bar seats can be one table or many. One “Bar” table is simple. Separate seats are better if each guest pays on their own tab.
  • Use the same names on bookings. The bookings calendar uses these tables, so a reservation for “Patio 2” lands on the right table.
  • Fewer, clearer names win in a rush. If servers hesitate to find a table, the name is too long.
  • Read more about running the floor on our floor plan and table service page.

If something goes wrong

Problem Fix
No tables show on the POS screen Check you added tables to the same location the open register belongs to.
A table shows as busy but the guests left An order is still open on it. Open the table, then pay or cancel the order.
Kitchen tickets cut off the table name Shorten the name. “Patio Two Window Corner” becomes “P2”.
A table appears twice Two tables have the same name. Rename or remove one in Settings → Tables.
Staff cannot add tables Only users with Settings access can. Ask the owner or a manager.

Questions about this step

Onboarding desk · usually replies within a business day

Do I need to add tables to use the POS?
POS Studio

For full-service restaurants, yes. Tables let servers keep several open orders at once and give you the table report. Counter-only sales can run without a table.

What should I name my tables?
POS Studio

Use the names your staff already say out loud, such as 12, B4 or Patio 2. Keep them short so they fit on kitchen tickets.

Can two locations have a table with the same number?
POS Studio

Yes. Tables belong to one location, so Table 12 downtown and Table 12 uptown do not clash.

How do I handle pushed-together tables for a large party?
POS Studio

Seat the party on one table name, for example the lowest number, and note the joined tables on the order. Split the check by seat or item at payment if needed.

Can I take a table out of use for a night?
POS Studio

Simply do not seat it. If a table is gone for good, edit or remove it in Settings → Tables so it stops showing on the POS screen.
