Before you start

Steps

  1. Add the location. In Settings, add a new business location. Enter the name guests know the restaurant by and the full address. The address prints on receipts and shows on your online store.
  2. Choose tax settings. Pick the default tax rate or tax group for this location. A tax group combines rates, for example a state tax and a city tax in the US. You can override tax on single products later.
  3. Set the receipt layout. Choose a receipt or invoice layout for this location, then fill in:
    • Logo: uses the business logo unless you upload a different one.
    • Header text: the restaurant name, address line, and tax number if you need it.
    • Footer text: a thank-you line, Wi-Fi name, or your returns note.
    • Language labels: the words printed next to totals, such as “Subtotal” and “Tax”. Change them to the language your guests read.
  4. Create a register. Add a register for each station that takes payment and holds cash. Give each one a clear name, such as “Host stand” or “Bar”, so reports are easy to read at closing.
  5. Open the register. Go to the POS screen. The app asks you to open a register. Count the cash in the drawer and enter it as the opening cash amount.
  6. Print a test receipt. Ring up one test item and take payment as cash. Print the receipt and check the logo, header, footer and totals. Then close the register and read the register close report.

Tips from the onboarding team

  • Name registers after places, not people. Staff change. The bar is always the bar.
  • Keep the opening cash the same every day. A fixed float makes the register close report quick to check.
  • Short footers print faster. Two or three lines are enough. Long text uses paper on every ticket.
  • Test on the real printer. Receipts look different on 58 mm and 80 mm paper. Most ESC/POS printers work over USB or the network; the cash drawer opens when the printer tells it to.
  • Second location? Repeat these steps. Each location keeps its own tables, registers and layout.

If something goes wrong

Problem Fix
The POS screen keeps asking me to open a register A register must be open before you sell. Enter the opening cash amount and confirm.
The receipt has no logo Upload a logo for the business or location, and check the layout shows the logo.
The receipt prints tax with the wrong name Edit the language labels on the receipt layout, or rename the tax rate in Settings.
The cash drawer does not open The drawer is kicked by the printer. Check the drawer cable is in the printer, not the tablet, and that the printer is selected for this location.
The register close report shows a difference Recount the drawer. Check for cash refunds, cash tips paid out, or an opening amount typed wrong.

Questions about this step

What is the difference between a location and a register?
POS Studio

A location is one restaurant address with its own tables, taxes and receipt layout. A register is a cash drawer or payment station inside that location. One location can have several registers.

How many registers should I create?
POS Studio

One for each place where staff take payment and hold cash. Many sit-down restaurants have one at the host stand and one at the bar.

What is the opening cash amount?
POS Studio

It is the cash in the drawer when the shift starts, often called the float or the bank. The register close report compares it with what is in the drawer at the end.

Can each location print a different receipt?
POS Studio

Yes. Each location has its own receipt and invoice layout, with its own logo, header text, footer text and language labels.

Can I put my tax number on the receipt?
POS Studio

Yes. Add it to the header or footer text of the receipt layout. In the UAE and Pakistan, check with your accountant which details your receipt must show.
