A month-to-month Toast alternative
Toast works well for many restaurants. Owners who look for a Toast alternative usually want shorter terms, their own hardware, their own processor or staff screens in another language. Here is what reviewers report, what to check before you leave, and how to switch without losing a service.

Why owners look for a Toast alternative
- 1
Contract length
Reviewers often report two- to three-year terms. Owners near the end of a term, or planning a change, look for month-to-month billing they can cancel in Settings.
- 2
Proprietary hardware
Toast runs on Toast-approved hardware, bought or leased. Some owners prefer to use iPads, Android tablets or PCs they already own and replace them when they choose.
- 3
Add-on costs
Reviews report a $9.95 monthly PCI fee and online ordering as a paid add-on of about $50 to $75 or more, as published October 17, 2026; confirm with Toast. Owners compare that with a plan that includes online ordering.
- 4
Staff screens in English
Some owners report their kitchen or floor team reads another language better than English. Ask Toast which languages it supports, and compare with per-user Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic or Urdu screens.
- 5
Processing tied to the system
Toast processing is part of the system, so the rate comes with the software. Owners who have a better rate from their bank look for a POS that works with their own processor.
Before you leave Toast
Check these five things first. They decide your switch date.
How the switch runs
- Start the free trialSign up online, create your business with currency, time zone and logo. No card is needed for the 14-day trial.
- Set up your floorAdd your location, registers, tables and floor plan, then staff with roles and service-staff PINs.
- Bring your menuImport your exported Toast menu as CSV or Excel, or let us import it for free. Check modifiers, sizes and allergy flags.
- Connect hardware and paymentsPair your ESC/POS receipt and kitchen printers and set up your processor's integrated terminal.
- Run a mock serviceTrain staff on one quiet shift, fire a few test tables, then go live on a slow night before the weekend.
What is the best Toast alternative for a sit-down restaurant?
The best Toast alternative is the one that fits how you run service. For an independent sit-down restaurant, look for a floor plan, coursing, kitchen screens, tip pooling and split checks in one plan. Restaurant POS Studio adds month-to-month billing, your own devices and processor, and multilingual staff screens.
Make a short list of what your Friday night needs. Then check each option against it on a demo, not a feature page. Ask how coursing looks on the kitchen screen and how tips close out at the end of the night.
Square for Restaurants, Clover and TouchBistro are also common choices, and each fits some restaurants well. Our comparison pages lay out where each one is stronger, with dated prices.
- Floor plan and table service per location.
- Coursing with fire and hold.
- Tip pooling and a close-of-day tip report.
- Online store included, not an add-on.
Can I switch from Toast before my contract ends?
Usually yes, but there may be an early termination fee. Read your agreement for the end date and the cost to leave early, and ask Toast to confirm it in writing. Some owners start our free trial a few weeks before the term ends, so the new system is ready on day one.
If your hardware is leased, the lease may run on its own schedule. Ask for the buyout or return terms. Owned hardware is yours, but it is built to run Toast.
While your Toast account is active, export your menu, customer list and sales history. Note any open gift card balances so you can honor them after the switch.
- Note the end date and early termination fee.
- Export data while your account is active.
- Start the trial a few weeks before go-live.

Why do restaurants leave Toast?
The most common reasons owners give are contract length, hardware that only runs Toast, add-on costs, and processing tied to the system. Others want staff screens in another language. Many restaurants are happy with Toast, so check whether these points apply to you before switching.
Is there a Toast alternative with no contract?
Yes. Restaurant POS Studio is month to month, and you can cancel in Settings. Square for Restaurants is also reported as month to month. Annual billing with us is optional and costs about 15% less.
Can I use my Toast printers with a new POS?
Often yes, if they are standard ESC/POS receipt or kitchen printers on USB or the network. Toast terminals and handhelds usually will not run other software. Send us your printer models on a demo and we will check them.
What happens to Toast gift cards when I switch?
Gift cards you sold are money you owe your guests, so plan to honor them. Export the balances before you leave and ask Toast how long cards stay redeemable. You can issue new gift cards in Restaurant POS Studio and record old balances by hand.
Is a Toast alternative cheaper overall?
Often, but compare full-year totals. Add the plan, PCI fee, add-ons, hardware lease and processing at your volume for Toast, as published in third-party reviews checked October 17, 2026, and confirm with Toast. Then add our plan and your processor's rate.
Will I lose my sales history?
Not if you export it first. Download your sales reports from Toast while your account is active and keep them for taxes and trends. Your new reports start from your first day on Restaurant POS Studio.
How long does it take to move off Toast?
Setup can take an afternoon, and most owners plan one or two weeks for training and a mock service. The slow part is usually contract timing, not the software. Start the trial early so you are ready when your term ends.
Is Restaurant POS Studio a Toast alternative in the UAE and Pakistan?
Yes. We sell in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, with AED or PKR pricing, 5% VAT in the UAE, sales tax in Pakistan, and Arabic or Urdu staff screens.
